Friday theme / Show & tell: How to find coolness in the summer heat…

May 16, 2008 · 19 Comments

Desiree’s chosen Friday themes continue with how do you find coolness /refreshness in the summer heat.

Well, in Puerto Rico it is more or less hot and humid all year round. We had a few months of less hot weather in the beginning of the year but the last month the weather has just become increasingly hotter and humid again. We try to not use the AC too much, and not during the night (partly because of the noise), but it is necessary to have a few of the machines on every now and then during the day. Opening the windows doesn’t really help…

So, how do I find coolness when it is hot? Here are a few examples:

Shade: I try to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day…

Stay in the shade...

View over la Plaza las Delicias, Ponce

Walks in the evening: O and I usually take walks after dinner – there is usually a refreshing breeze along the beach

Take a walk on the beach in the evening

A barefoot walk on the beach by the Baltic Sea, Sweden

Stay close to any kind of water – sea, lake, river or waterfall… Unfortunately this was almost impossible in Brussels which can be very humid in the summer but only has a [not very charming] canal in a rough area of town.

A refreshing waterfall in Spain

In Spain we once went to Monasterio de Piedra (southwest of Calatayud) where there is a refreshing park with lots of waterfalls

Drink lots of fluids and eat fresh fruit & vegetables

Eat fruit and drink apple juice!

Photo from last summer in Skåne, there was a unmanned stand offering fruit and apple juice for sale.

And I try to avoid unshaded beaches such as the one below!!

One of the hottest placest I have visited - the Dead Sea

This must be the hottest place I have visited – the Dead Sea in Israel. There was hardly any shade and the thermometer actually did go up to 40, here it only shows 37 degrees (99 degrees Fahrenheit). The beach is not very nice either; hard sand and mud…
