is visiting university campuses (and meeting my fellow bloggers), and our recent trip followed the same pattern. O brought me to Princeton in New Jersey on the first day, and we had a lovely and refreshingly cold walk around the university campus. It reminded me of our first trip to the US in 2005 when we visited both Yale and Harvard* in New England, as well as our trip to California where we had joint campus-blogger meetings with Monica, Lotta K and Ing. Not to forget the walk around the Georgetown campus in Washington DC a few months ago. Oh, and we even managed to visit a second campus (Cornell) last week in Ithaca, New York.

Cornell campus in snow, Ithaca, New York – it is probably my favourite American university campus and for that matter university town. It is beautiful set on the steep shores of one of the Finger Lakes (Cayuga Lake) and Ithaca, the town is very picturesque with old wooden houses.
I asked O why he has such a fascination for the locations of American academia and he pointed out that the campuses are usually set in very pretty places which are bustling with life – and they seem more real and cosy than normal American towns. I think that the biggest difference is that people actually walk or even cycle in college towns! O said that he wished that he could have studied in a place like that, and then I realised that I did – Lund might not have a proper American-styled university campus but the relatively small town’s identity is so interlinked and influenced by the students everywhere you go.

This is a small comparative study of American campuses, while you will have to wait a bit longer for more about our actual trip – my father [and even more my grandfather] is impatiently awaiting a translation from French to Swedish of a letter from his uncle’s Swiss wife and a French translation of his answer to her tomorrow (I forgot this on my to-do-list yesterday)**…
