A book recommendation just before Christmas:
If you are interested in Puerto Rico and its culture (or just a good read), you should definitely read the novel When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. I started reading it yesterday, and it is really well written. Esmeralda grew up in Puerto Rico in the 1950’s (I think) as the oldest child in a family of eventually 11 children. Her mother moved with the children to New York when the author was 13 (I haven’t reached that far yet) and she tells the story of her childhood in Puerto Rico and the move to the US. It is a very interesting and good book, and I have already recognised lots of things, from the geography to [Christmas] traditions and food.
I am writing this with VH1’s 100 Greatest songs of the 90’s in the background… It is GREAT, talk about being nostalgic – every song from Ice Ice Baby to California love to Whatta man to Sabotage* – sometimes I wonder if I am stuck in the 90’s when it comes to music.. The list keeps surprising me though, thinking did Baby one more time with Britney Spears really come out in the NINETIES?? I feel so old all of a sudden (and all the Hanson boys are married and have children – remember Mmmbop?) 😉
O, my mother and my siblings are out shopping – the 2nd round to the supermarket after my parents, O and I spent more time in the parking than inside Costco (we became members today!) where we didn’t find everything that we need for our Swedish / Spanish / Puertorican Chrismas celebration. We are going to bake pepparkakor (ginger bread cookies) and attempt to make rhum glögg tonight!
