At the end of every year, I like to do an inventory of the past year and think about what was good, and what was bad and what can be improved… For a few years I felt that the year gone past had not been very good, and not better than the year before. However, lately the years have improved and my conclusion for 2007 is that it was a great year!
Trip of the year: so many to chose from, but probably Finland in April-May with O, visiting his brother J-I who was studying in Vasa as an Erasmus student 2006-07. I wrote about our trip in one of my first blog posts.
Wedding of the year: S & S in Antwerp, June. It was great to see the Flemish couple get married as they have been living apart in different countries so many times (Italy three times between them, Sweden and Austria). It was also a so-called masterini reunion, i.e friends from my master’s programme! Too bad that O and I had to leave early as we had a plane to catch the next morning…
Party of the year: Last dinner on Rue des Platanes, Brussels in August before O moved to Puerto Rico. We had invited most of our friends who live in Brussels, O had made his speciality Chicken Tikka Masala and I had composed a quiz about O, Spain and his new destination… French C won the game and the prize – a package of frosting sugar😉 . In the end all guests went home with 1-2 bottles of alcohol as we had to empty our stock before the move.
Tea of the year: High tea in the Kensington Palace Orangery, London, May with O’s American friend K – we had a wonderful Ascension weekend with her and her Italian husband, including Camden market, visiting Brick lane, partying at a cool nightclub (which is a strip club during the week!!) and having dinner in one of those fancy, expensive restaurants (we didn’t get reservations until midnight!).
Weekend of the year: the Pentecost weekend in Normandie, May with our French and Greek friends – another one of those first blog posts…
Dish of the year: Chicken /Turkey Tikka Masala, made by O and tried out the first time on Swedish P – he liked it so O continued making it. It was O’s idea from the beginning to save money as he thought that the Indian restaurant across the street from our apartment in Brussels was charging too much for take-away meals..
Film of the year: The Queen – I think that I saw it in 2007? Swedish M and I saw it while the boyfriends A and O went to see Borat – we enjoyed our cinema experience more than they did😉 I haven’t been that much to the cinema this year unfortunately.
Cd of the year: Kent – Tillbaka till samtiden. The greatest Swedish band!!
Book of the year: When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago, Hur man närmar sig ett träd by Eva Dahlgren and The liberated bride by A. B Yehoshua (it hasn’t been a great book year, it feels like all the great books I can think of, were read in 2006!).
Restaurant of the year: Mamacitas in Culebra, great colours, atmosphere and food!
Phenomenon of the year: my blog (and everybody else’s – I had never read a blog before 2007).
Fika of the year: at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, November with three couples – two with baby sons, and one Swedish/French couple. We didn’t see much art but there is a nice café with enough room for prams. We had a very funny discussion about the game peek-a-boo / tittut and what it could be called in French – the French guy had no idea!
Baby of the year: Italian(/Belgian) C, born in January and lunched with mum K and I at least once every 2 weeks @ the Irish pub The Wild Geese until October.
Girls’ weekend of the year: Venice including a hen party for a groom, January.
Move of the year: O finally and officially moving in with me end of January in Brussels. We had more or less lived together ever since we met but now it was official and we even got the cohabitation légale done in Belgium (an official certificate that you are cohabitating!) – not that it helped for my American visa…
Busiest travel month of the year: May (Finland, Stockholm, London, Normandie).
Scariest experience of the year: horseback riding in Normandie – I don’t think that I will get up on a horse again! I mean, where is the seat belt?
Friends of the year: all the friends left behind in Brussels – we miss you!!
Lunch partner of the year: Swedish E in Brussels, once a week (at least) at Tea & Eat or the Brasserie – I miss our long conversations when we almost forgot about getting back to the office in time. Once we were even filmed for a promotional film for the Brasserie and we were just babbling on in Swedish..
Longest flight of the year: to Puerto Rico in June which included delays of 5 hours in Brussels, 4 hours at JFK (including 3 hours sitting in the plane) and no luggage when we finally arrived at our destination… (and we had just slept 3 hours due to the Wedding of the year…).
Family time of the year: Going to Switzerland with my parents to visit my father’s uncle who has lived in the Alpine country since the 1950’s.
Beach trip of the year: the summerhouse in Juleboda, Skåne with the siblings, August. We had a great time, relaxing, playing Scrabble (grr..) & Buzz (Playstation game about music) and barbequing.
New friend of the year: Swedish B in Puerto Rico – we found each other on sviv.se and met up for the first time in June when O and I came to PR. She and her husband are great and we get along really well!
Drink of the year: My brother’s smoothies made with fresh mango or pineapple, December.
Sport session of the year: a tie between spinning lessons with Swedish E as the instructor and badminton with the Flemish couple S & I (followed by their great BBQs).
BBQs of the year: all of them @ S’s and I’s place in Brussels, summer 2007.
Romantic dinner of the year: O’s birthday surprise for me @ Belga Queen, July even if the restaurant seems to be a bit overrated, however the toilets are cool!
Design weekend of the year: P No 1’s and my weekend trip to Milan, September.
French weekend of the year: Paris in September with French S, C, P and F.
Sweetest of the year: O, of course. We were apart for almost 3,5 months so it was great to live together again when I arrived to Puerto Rico in mid-November. He always makes me smile and I’m so happy that we are experiencing this Caribbean adventure together.
Now, there were lots of other great moments in 2007 but these are the ones that came to mind when I made my list.
Let’s hope that 2008 is another great year for all of us!
Felices fiestas y buena entrada en 2008!
Gott Nytt År 2008!
