Just a quick note from Vieques, the sister island to Culebra, off the east coast of Puerto Rico. We arrived yesterday on the cargo ferry, an extra service as the passenger ferry was full. It was much less choppy than my previous crossings to Culebra – maybe because the cargo ferry is bigger, but sitting out on the deck, we got sprayed with sea water a few times.
The guesthouse where we are staying is great, Casa de Amistad. It’s very cosy and friendly, with soft jazz music playing, a small paddling pool, a kitchen and a great host – Dan from Milwaukee! We are so happy with this place, especially as it has been raining all day and we didn’t manage to get a rental car (we spoke to some other guests who had booked 2 months ago and only got a crap small car!!)… Ignorant Europeans as we are, we had missed that it is a long weekend – it’s President’s day tomorrow and all the rental cars on the island are rented! There could be worse places to be stuck in though!
Yesterday we took a taxi to one of the famous Vieques beaches – Sun Bay, which is a public balneario (beach). O and I had a great nap on the warm sand, while our guest P went for a walk and snorkel. We had planned to discover the Red, Green and Blue beaches today, but as the French say Tant pis (Too bad), we’ll try again tomorrow…
Anyway, we are keeping our good spirits, O is right now getting us some rhum, coke and beers and we might meet up tonight with some nice Americans who we met on the ferry.
I will post some photos when I get back to San Juan.
PS. California girls: we have finally booked our tickets! We are coming to San Francisco on the 28th February and staying in California until the 10th March. Are we meeting up??
