Something happened to me for the first time on Wednesday: I was stung by a bee!! It hurt so much that I cried (and swore, which my mother told me off for!!) and my arm is still really warm, swollen and red – it stung me right below my armpit. The vicious bee was following me and then waited for me while I went inside twice! Talk about being ambushed!
We have had a wasp invasion at the summerhouse this week, which is really annoying as it is almost impossible to eat outdoors. My father has placed open beer cans in strategic places on the wooden deck to lure them away from our food but it doesn’t seem to work too well. Does anybody know of a better way to get rid of the flying beasts?? However, I was stung by a bee (the sting was stuck in my arm, ouch!!) which is a little ironic seeing all the wasps that I have been fighting off. I am not afraid of them and never panic, well maybe I will now when how painful it can be! It is by the way one of the things I have noticed about Puerto Rico, or rather San Juan – there are no insects; no irritating flies, no wasps, hardly even any mosquitoes (however, they are plentiful in the countryside and they are aggressive and soundless!).

Five things on your “to do” list today
1. Pick up the laundry that my mother’s done, from the basement
2. Drive to the summerhouse with my parents
3. Try to call O, we haven’t spoken for two days
4. Decide what to cook for dinner with my parents and go to the supermarket in Åhus
5. Prepare for the Flemish visit – O’s and my Flemish friends who have partially moved to Sweden (guy’s in Sthlm, girl’s still in Bxl) are driving down from Stockholm to stay with me for a few days
What did you do ten years ago?
In 1998 I lived with my then boyfriend in Lund, I had just finished studying the bachelor level of political science and the most boring course ever – Decision-making and negotiations in the European Union. I had decided never to aim to work in the EU… oh well, never say never!
In the summer I went to Scotland with my parents and sister to visit my brother who was working in Greenock (north of Glasgow). It was a great holiday; we drove around the Highlands enjoying the scenery, staying in small B&Bs and gaining weight from all the fry-up breakfasts!
In the autumn I moved to Annecy in France to study French, while my boyfriend moved to Munich to study German. I had a great time living in the same region as Geneva where I had been an au-pair 3 years earlier (meeting up with my au-pair family). I didn’t get to know that many French students as my courses were at a language school full of Swedes and Japanese students. However, I became very good friends with E and M from Linköping, incidentally we already knew each other as I had been their mentor when they started university the year after me.
My best memory from the autumn was the visit from my father’s uncle who lived in Switzerland – he spent a weekend with me in Annecy and we only spoke French while talking about his life, my deceased grandmother and his love for jellied pigs’ trotters (grisfötter). Of course he still spoke Swedish even if he had lived over 50 years abroad and had a Swiss wife, but he thought that I should practise my French. Unfortunately he died a month ago, which was very sad as he was like an uncle to me.

Five things you would do if you became a billionaire
1. Pay off my student debts
2. Buy a nice old Spanish house and renovate it with O, and then open a guesthouse
3. Travel the world
4. Convince my aunt to sell me her 75% of our old summerhouse so that the whole family could enjoy it
5. Donate to charity
I am not passing the challenge to anybody special as it seems like it has been circulating already for a while.
