Back in the Caribbean and already missing the snow and cold, even though it did feel kind of good to not have to put on three or four layers of clothes when leaving the house today. We are once again waiting for our luggage, Finnair seriously has an issue with delivering our belongings. Fortunately it doesn’t seem to be a problem that they need to send it to Puerto Rico, even though our tickets were just for Madrid (keep your fingers crossed though, you never know…).
Luggage arriving… Don’t you just hate when people put their trolleys right up to the luggage belt to block everybody else from reaching their suitcases? It always, without fail makes me pissed off while waiting for my luggage!! Notice that I am keeping my distance to the belt, which gives me an over-view but still allows other people to pass if their suitcase arrives before mine!
I hope that we won’t have to wait too long, but at least we don’t have a great need for our winter clothes for the next few months. Hopefully O’s Kalles Kaviar and Prästost (cheese) might even survive the wait, if the Finns are not heating the storage facilities in the Helsinki airport!? On the bright side: the boring unpacking is postponed 😉
In January 2003 I considered never travelling during winter again, after my Brussels flight was cancelled from Copenhagen airport due to a blizzard, waiting outside IN the blizzard for a taxi for two hours, and carrying two big bags THROUGH the snow for 500 m when the taxi refused to enter my friend’s unploughed street in Christianshavn in the middle of the night etc etc.
Surprisingly enough we didn’t have too much trouble from the snowy weather in Madrid on Sunday evening, except having to wait an hour for the hotel shuttle (driven by an unfriendly Romanian woman), and the only delay we experienced yesterday was in Miami where the pilot and co-pilot were stuck in Immigration while we sat on the plane for an hour waiting for them!
Finnair snack – a simple but tasty sandwich with cheese, cucumber and lettuce on a rye roll. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the American Airlines snack yesterday: a cheesy, greasy pizza… I bet the roll was cheaper (and healthier)!
Madrid airport toilet – NO bins! And that’s why that special bin in the cubicle was overloaded with old diapers etc… Why not a bin or two by the sinks? Don’t tell me it is because of the security risk – this photo is from inside the airport after the security check!
White Spain by air – we had a desperately contact-seeking* Peruvian man in front of us on the plane who [among other things] asked O if it was the Alps… I think they are called Sierra de Guadarrama, the mountains north of Madrid.
Leaving Helsinki airport in the afternoon (even though it looks like it was late at night) and in -10… Queuing outside the airplane for 15 minutes! Organising an airport in the cold north should definitely include boarding planes directly from the gate and not by stair-case out on the run-way
And now it is time for bed, O is already asleep. Tomorrow I will answer the comments on my previous posts and read your blogs – it is time to get back to the everyday routine!
*) This is why I try to avoid talking to people on planes, if we had given him the opportunity I am sure that he would never have stopped talking during the 9 hour flight…
