May has started cold and grey after three incredibly sunny and warm April weeks. But the weather hasn’t stopped us from doing lots of fun stuff; the 1st May-weekend my dear French friend P No 1 came from Geneva to spend two days with us (and help us move to the apartment hotel). One of our Flemish friends, S came from Antwerp to spend the afternoon with us (P No 1 & No 2) and O.
Here are some photos of our weekend activities:
Driving to Tervueren, a park and village outside Brussels. The drive is beautiful, through the beech forest which at this time of the year is magnificent with its young light-green leaves. I am so happy that I will experience the new beech foliage twice this year as Olgakatt has told me that in the north of Skåne the beeches are still light-green! Maybe you have to be from Skåne to understand the obsession with the beech leaves in spring?😉
This past weekend: included a visit to Ikea with our French-Greek friends, strolling around the Avenue de Tervueren (just outside our apartment) during the 112th anniversary of the avenue (!!) with another French friend and playing badminton on Sunday evening…
Is it just in Ikea in Belgium that the meatballs are served with fries? In Spain they refused to serve us fries as they were reserved for another dish… The boiled potatoes are usually so bad that I refer the fries.
As I wrote in my previous post, we woke up on Sunday morning to a view of tents and stands and no traffic in the roundabout and on the big avenue. O said that it must be the same festivities we visited 5 years ago on our first “date”. On the 22nd May 2005 (the date for the celebrations must be floating…) O called me up the day after we had met at a Eurovision party, to suggest that we took a walk to check out the market / festival going on in Avenue de Tervueren and here we are five years later!
Les Petits Gilles – our French friend C explained to us that the “small Gilles” is a carnival character. I tried to google the history of the character but I couldn’t find anything except for photos from carnivals in Binche and Nivelles (Belgian cities).
A video of Let Petits Gilles where you can see parts of the avenue. The tunnel at the end is the one that crosses underneath the park…
